Step 3: Setup your VoIP phone
(Choose one or more ways to connect from A to F.)
A. The highest quality is achieved with a hardware based SIP phone or VoIP ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter) with G.729 support (like Snom, Grandstream, Atcom, Polycom, Aastra, Cisco, Linksys, Mitel). Our personal favourite is the Atcom 530P. Enter the following details in the phone dialogue (right):
1. In place of 'SIP Server' or 'Proxy' enter 'sip.vocalcall.net'
2. port: 5060 (or 6060 if you experience problems)
3. Enter in the username and password that was mailed to you.
4. Do a test call by dialing 900 and then clicking or pressing on the Call button.
5. Dial all numbers in the international format 00441234567890 (for UK) or 0011234567890 (for US). Note: To test your connection speed use speedtest.net.
B. Our branded Windows XP softphone (includes G.729, but ONLY Windows XP compatible)
Or the free or commercial CounterPath Eyebeam or Bria with G.729 which provides great quality on Windows Vista, Linux and Mac. A free version of X-Lite can also be downloaded for Vista and Mac without G.729.
(The G.729 CODEC provides great call quality and 8kbps versus 64kbps bandwidth usage. Thus 8x less bandwidth needed and therefore less chance of network congestion.)
Note: In all cases broadband Internet access is a prerequisite. Your call is only as good as your connection. On our end we make every effort to have great quality calls 24/7.
And remember to dial all calls (except the test number, which is 900) as 00<country code><telephone number> (often an area code has a 0 prefix that needs to be dropped in this format).

C. For your mobile phone we suggest Nimbuzz using a WiFi, 3G or better connection.
C.1 From this link the Send yourself an SMS for the software setup link.
C.2 Then register a free Nimbuzz account.
C.3 And then set up an "Other SIP" account to use VocalCall on it.
C.4 On the Nimbuzz settings, ensure that you set the calling function to SIP and not your usual cellphone provider.
C.5 Select the "Phone Calls" function (if it shows your VocalCall setup at the top you are ready to make calls.)
C.6 Select the "Dial a number" function and always enter telephone numbers as 00<country code><number without leading 0> or dial 900 for a test call.
D. Or if you use a Nokia that supports SIP Internet calls. Have a look here on how to set it up.
E. Windows Mobile phones supporting SIP can also be set up. Please refer to you phone's documentation on how to set it up. (Information can often be found searching Google about your phone.) Alternatively. look at the bottom of this page for more information on installing SJPhone on your mobile. F. Or try one of these alternatives. Including options for Linux, Java and Flash.
